Architect Berlage has been a recurring theme in my life for the past few weeks. At the moment I'm drawing up a plan for wallpaper producer R&H (Rath & Doodeheefver) for the design of a new and exlusive collection of wallcoverings. R&H was a big name in wallpaper in the first half of the 20th century, with the highest artistic ambitions ("only the best is good enough"). In the 1920s they released a collection called 'Holandsche Kunst' ('Dutch Art') with designs by famous architects and decorative artists like Berlage, Carel Lion Cachet, Jaap Gidding and Theo Nieuwenhuis. The wallpaper below, called 'Ophiodea', was designed by Berlage. It was based on Ernst Haeckels 'Kunstformer der Natur' and produced by R&H in 1927.
