While Sven Kramer was honoured in the Holland House in Vancouver, I thought it would be a good idea to write an item about another Holland House: The 'Old Holland House' in Delft. Build in 1893 and commissioned by industrialist Lambert van Meerten.
Een bezoek aan dit huis is alsof je een tijdcapsule binnenstapt! Het gebouw zelf is in Nederlandse Neo-Renaissance stijl waardoor het eerder 3 eeuwen ouder oogt. Van Meerten's collectie - antieke ramen, deuren en balken uit verschillende tijdsperiodes - werd in het ontwerp geintegreerd.
Visiting this house is like entering a time capsule! The building itself in in Dutch Neo-Renaissance style and therefore looks rather 3 centuries older. Van Meertens' collection - antique windows, doors and beams from different periods - was incorporated into the design.
Tegelijkertijd waren de technische systemen - centrale hete lucht verwarming, stromend water, electriciteit en gas - voor die tijd hoogst moderne snufjes!
However, the technical systems - central hot air heating, running water, electricity and gas - were extremely modern in those days!
Sinds 1909, na de dood van van Meerten, is het huis een museum. Er is onder meer een grote collectie eeuwenoude Hollandse tegels te zien, sommigen met een verbluffend hedendaagse uitstraling!
Since 1909, after van Meerten died, the house is a museum. With among others a large collection of centuries old Dutch tiles, some of which have a baffling contemporary look!
