Dit kwam ik de afgelopen maanden zoal tegen in Delft (voor wie daar nog nooit het legermuseum bezocht heeft: een absolute aanrader voor een regenachtige dag), Amsterdam en Groningen.

Here are some of the things I encountered in the past few months in Delft (for those of you who never visited the army-museum there: it's highly recommendable for a rainy day), Amsterdam and Groningen.

garderobe / wardrobe

Dit garderobemeubel heb ik onlangs ontworpen voor een particulier in Delft. Het biedt ruimte aan jassen van verschillende lengtes, heeft twee schoenenlades en diverse vakken voor hoeden en handschoenen.

Recently I designed this hat-and-coat stand for a family in Delft. It accomodates different length coats, has two shoe-drawers and various compartments for hats and gloves.

De 'Unisphere', het symbool van de wereldtentoonstelling van 1964. Het 12 verdiepingen tellende stalen bouwwerk werd ontworpen door Peter Muller-Munk Associates en geplaatst op dezelfde fundamenten waar voorheen een andere gigantische bol stond (de 'Perisphere' uit 1939).

Decorontwerper Ken Adam gebruikte veelvuldig een wereldkaart als achtergrond voor de 'slechterikken' in de James Bond films, als symbool van hun zucht naar wereldheerschappij.
Set designer Ken Adam frequently used a world map as a back drop for the 'bad guys' in the James Bond Movies, as a symbol for their strive towards world domination.


Nog een ontwerp van Ken Adam: de 'War Room' in de film Dr. Strangelove van Stanley Kubrick uit 1964. De knipperlichtjes op de strategische kaart laten de voortgang zien van de bommenwerpers op weg naar hun Russische doelen.

glas / glass

Mijn ontwerp voor de gezandstraalde decoraties op de glaswanden in het gemeentehuis van Enkhuizen, wordt op dit moment uitgevoerd. Het bestaat uit een patroon van takjes, wat in verschillende varianten toegepast is, afhankelijk van de gewenste mate van privacy. Hier vast een voorproefje.

My design for the sandblasted decorations on the glass walls in the town hall of Enkhuizen, is currently being realized. It consists of a pattern of twigs, which is applied in different variances, depending on the desired measure of privacy. Here's a foretaste.

Baksteen / Brick

Tot 1 juli kun je in het Groothandelsgebouw in Rotterdam nog de tentoonstelling 'Brick' bezoeken. De tentoonstelling toont nieuwe typen bakstenen van diverse Nederlandse en buitenlandse kunstenaars en architecten. Sommige exposanten hebben zich op het visuele experiment gestort, anderen hebben vooral nieuwe constructieve toepassingen bedacht.
Mijn absolute favoriet was de 'Cube Brick' van Ben Oostrum en Rob Bonneur. Een oer-Hollandse roodbruine baksteen, maar dan in een hexagonale vorm. De 'Cube' heeft niet alleen een prachtig visueel effect maar ook nog eens een constructieve logica. Je vraagt je af waarom nooit eerder iemand er opgekomen was...

During the month of june you can still go visit the exhibition 'Brick' in the Groothandelsgebouw in Rotterdam. The exhibition shows new types of brick by a number of both Dutch and foreign artists and architects. Some of them have gone for the visual experiment, others have developed new constructive applications.
My absolute favourite was the 'Cube Brick', by Ben Oostrum and Rob Bonneur. A quintessential Dutch red brick, but with a hexagonal shape. The Cube does not only have a stunning visual effect, it also posesses a structural logic. Makes you wonder why nobody thought of it before...

vaarwel / farewell

De sloop van ons oude Rotterdams Centraal Station vordert gestaag. Daarom leek het me goed om op de valreep nog even te laten zien hoe het ooit begon. Natuurlijk, van een volwaardig stationsplein (compleet met gezellige plantenbakken!) is al lang geen sprake meer. De ruimtelijkheid van de stationshal is uiteraard al jaren teniet gedaan door de monsterlijke, pal voor de glazen gevel geplaatste winkeltjes. En zelfs de kaartloketten hebben inmiddels plaats moeten maken voor hoogst onpersoonlijke kaartautomaten en de zoveelste Albert Heijn. Maar de fotoos laten in ieder geval wel goed zien waarom het markante gebouw van Sybold van Ravesteyn ooit behoorde tot de parels van de Rotterdamse Wederopbouw architectuur. Met pijn in mijn hart neem ik daarom afscheid...vaarwel!

The demolition of our old Rotterdam Central Station is making a steady progress. That's why I thought it would be a good idea to show you how it once started. Of course, nothing has been left of the well functioning station square (complete with cosy plant containers!) for decades now. The spaciousness of the central hall vanished into nothingness years ago, when a monstrosity of shops was placed straight in front of the glass facade. And even the ticket-office has been replaced by impersonal vending-machines and the umpteenth supermarket. But at least the pictures show clearly why the striking building by Sybold van Ravesteyn was once considered one of the pearls of post-war architecture in Rotterdam. That's why I say goodbye with an aching heart...farewell!
